Behind the Glamour: The Lasting Lessons from My Grandfather in Beauty Pageants

Beauty pageants often appear as dazzling displays of elegance and poise, but beneath the surface lies a world rich with tradition, discipline, and unexpected wisdom. This year, I reached the finalist stage in a not so major pageant, a milestone that brought back vivid memories of my childhood. One moment stands out clearly: when my grandfather showed me a television program about beauty pageants, made just for someone like me. That moment shaped my understanding of the pageant world and revealed lessons that go far beyond the stage.

The Unexpected Mentor

My grandfather was never involved in beauty pageants, yet he had a deep appreciation for the values they represented for me and especially the Miss USA and Miss America. When I was little, he noticed my fascination with the glittering gowns and confident smiles on TV. One evening, he sat me down and pointed to a program that explained the history, challenges, and skills behind pageantry. He said, “This is for you. It’s more than just looks.”

That simple act of sharing knowledge sparked a lifelong curiosity. He taught me to look beyond the surface and understand the dedication required to succeed. His encouragement helped me see the pageant community as a place where strength, intelligence, and kindness matter just as much as appearance.

Lessons That Shape the Journey

Discipline and Preparation

Pageants demand rigorous preparation. From fitness routines to practicing interviews, every detail counts. My grandfather’s lesson was clear: success comes from consistent effort, not luck. He reminded me that behind every graceful walk is hours of practice, and behind every confident answer is deep self-awareness.

For example, during my recent competition, I spent weeks refining my public speaking skills. I remembered his words and focused on expressing my true self rather than trying to fit a mold. This approach helped me connect with judges and the audience authentically.

Embracing Authenticity

One of the most valuable lessons I learned is the importance of being genuine. Pageants often emphasize perfection, but my grandfather showed me that authenticity creates lasting impressions. He encouraged me to embrace my unique qualities and share my story honestly.

During the talent portion of the competition, I chose a performance that reflected my personality rather than what I thought judges wanted. This choice made me feel confident and helped me stand out in a positive way.

Building Community and Support

The world of beauty pageants is a close-knit community. My grandfather’s insight helped me appreciate the friendships and support systems that develop behind the scenes. Contestants often cheer each other on, share advice, and celebrate successes together.

This year, as a finalist, I experienced firsthand how important this support is. Fellow contestants became allies, offering encouragement during stressful moments. The camaraderie reminded me that pageants are not just about competition but also about connection.

The Secrets I Know Now

Thanks to my grandfather’s early guidance, I understand some of the “secrets” that many newcomers miss:

  • Confidence grows from preparation, not just natural talent. Practicing skills and knowing your material builds a foundation that shines on stage.

  • Kindness is a strength, not a weakness. Supporting others and showing empathy creates a positive reputation and lasting friendships.

  • Every detail matters. From posture to wardrobe choices, small things add up to a polished presentation.

  • Your story is your power. Sharing personal experiences with sincerity resonates more than rehearsed answers.

  • Resilience is key. Setbacks happen, but learning from them and moving forward defines true success.

  • Woman Empowerment. Remember the movie Miss Congeniality when every contestant answered during finalist questions, World Peace. That was never just in that movie. (Thank you Sandra Bullock)

Why These Lessons Matter Beyond Pageants

The values I learned apply to many areas of life. Discipline, authenticity, community, and resilience are qualities that help in careers, relationships, and personal growth. My grandfather’s wisdom gave me tools to navigate challenges with confidence and grace.

For anyone interested in pageants or any competitive field, these lessons offer a roadmap. They remind us that behind every glamorous moment is hard work and heart.

Moving Forward with Gratitude and Purpose

Being a finalist this year was a proud achievement, but the real prize is the knowledge and character I gained along the way. My grandfather’s early belief in me and his simple act of sharing that television program planted seeds that continue to grow.

If you are drawn to the world of beauty pageants, remember to look beyond the surface. Seek mentors, prepare diligently, and stay true to yourself. The journey will teach you more than you expect, and the lessons will last a lifetime.

Take the time to find your own guiding voices and embrace the community around you. The glamour is just the beginning; the real story is in the growth and connections you build.

My Grandpa let me watch the Miss World 1991 and he taught me how to cheer but Miss Venezuela must win and she did, in the first picture is a favorite of mine Ninibeth Leal of Venezuela was crowned Miss World 1991. South Africa is a very diverse country and the Miss South Africa 1997 had a diverse crowning moment the same like in 1995 with an overseas pageant. Saving the best for last is Miss SA 1995 Bernelee Daniell who was my favorite contestant finalist during this pageant.
